Who I Work With
About Me . . .
I used to isolate myself. I dreaded talking to people I didn’t know and avoided events where socializing was necessary. At the time I blamed it on other people being “annoying” and having “nothing to talk about,” but these viewpoints only revealed my own self-perception. The truth was that I was afraid of people seeing me as I was. If they examined me, I feared they might find me somehow unacceptable, feel that something about me was unpleasant, and conclude that I was unworthy of their love.
Secret self-doubts, fears and other emotions often guide our thoughts, words and behaviors. Especially when we have been hurt before, many of us dread being vulnerable with others because it creates a possibility for pain. However, I believe the only way to truly get needs met is by being open and vulnerable with others. Uncomfortable as it may be, the reward is exceedingly great.
As a therapist, I do my best to create an alliance with individuals, couples and families to ensure they feel safe sharing even the most unsettling truths. I will walk alongside you as you seek to get your unique needs met, supporting you during whatever stage of the journey you find yourself.
My Emphasis . . .
Sometimes the thoughts that come most frequently are the most distressing. We doubt the things we wish we were sure of, and we say and do things that we later regret. And even when we’re doing our best to be a good friend, wife, father, daughter or son, we often fall short of our own expectations.
While each of our life experiences are personal and specific to us, there are many common experiences that connect us as human beings. During therapy, we will explore the complexities of these experiences to help you discover your path toward more joy, fulfillment and peace of mind.
My Values . . .
As a Christian, I strive to develop therapeutic relationships characterized by empathy, respect, compassion and trust. I seek to create an atmosphere that cultivates and maintains these qualities, as I believe they are essential for a successful therapy process.
As an African American woman, I am sensitive to the needs of underprivileged persons and those dealing with adversity. Knowing how it feels to be prematurely judged and categorized, I do not presume to know how your life experiences have shaped your current realities. Instead, I will remain open to learning about your unique experiences and carefully address the issues you share. As you reach for healing, change and improvement in your life, I would be delighted to assist you!
